CIRCULAR NEEDLE SIZE 3.5 MM: length 40 cm for stocking stitch.
CIRCULAR NEEDLE SIZE 2.5 MM: length 40 cm for rib.
Needle size is only a guide. If you have too many stitches on 10 cm, change to a larger needle size. If you have too few stitches on 10 cm, change to a smaller needle size.

PATTERN:
See diagrams A.1 to A.3.

DECREASE /INCREASE TIP (evenly spaced):
To work out how to decrease/increase evenly, count the total number of stitches on the needle (e.g. 104 stitches) and divide by the number of decreases/increases to be made (e.g. 8) = 13. In this example, knit each 12th and 13h stitch together when decreasing.
If you are increasing, make 1 yarn over after each 13th stitch. On the next round knit the yarn overs twisted to avoid holes.

DECREASE TIP:
Decrease 1 stitch on each side of the marker thread as follows: Work until there are 3 stitches left before the marker thread, slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch, knit 2 (the marker thread sits in the middle of these 2 stitches), knit 2 together.

HAT - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE:
The piece is worked in the round with circular needle, bottom up. Change to double pointed needles when necessary.

HAT:
Cast on 104-112-112-120 stitches with circular needle size 2.5 mm with light grey. Knit 1 round. Then work rib (= knit 2 / purl 2) for 3 cm. Change to circular needle size 3.5 mm. Knit 1 round where you decrease 8 stitches evenly on round in all sizes – read DECREASE/INCREASE TIP = 96-104-104-112 stitches. Work A.1 in the round (= 12-13-13-14 repeats of 8 stitches). On the round marked with an arrow, increase 0-1-1-2 stitches evenly = 96-105-105-114 stitches. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! When A.1 has been completed, work A.2 in the round (= 32-35-35-38 repeats of 3 stitches). On the round marked with an arrow decrease 0-1-1-2 stitches evenly = 96-104-104-112 stitches. When A.2 has been completed, work A.3 in the round (= 12-13-13-14 repeats of 8 stitches). When A.3 has been completed, work stocking stitch with red to finished length. Continue working until the piece measures 16-17-18-19 cm. Insert 1 marker at the beginning of the round and insert 1 marker after 48-52-52-56 stitches (these markers mark the sides). On the next round decrease 1 stitch on each side of each marker – read DECREASE TIP (= 4 stitches decreased). Decrease like this every 3rd round a total of 23-25-25-27 times = 4 stitches on needle in all sizes. Cut the strand, pull it through the remaining stitches, pull tight and fasten well. The hat measures approx. 38-41-42-45 cm from the top down.

TASSEL:
1 tassel = Cut the desired number of strands of red (for example 30 pieces), each 20 cm in length. Then cut 1 red strand of approx. 23 cm to use to fasten the tassel with. Lay this strand across the middle of the other strands. Fold the 20 cm strands double and tie a new strand of red around the tassel (approx. 1½ cm from the top). Fasten the strands well and then sew the tassel to the top of the hat.

22 stitches in width and 30 rows in height with stocking stitch = 10 x 10 cm.

NEEDLES:
DOUBLE POINTED NEEDLES SIZE 3.5 MM.
CIRCULAR NEEDLE SIZE 3.5 MM: length 40 cm for stocking stitch.
CIRCULAR NEEDLE SIZE 3 MM: length 40 cm for rib.
The needle size is only a guide. If you have too many stitches on 10 cm, change to a larger needle size. If you have too few stitches on 10 cm, change to a smaller needle size.

CROCHET HOOK:
CROCHET HOOK SIZE 3 MM: for noses.
PATTERN:
See diagram A.1. The whole pattern is worked in stocking stitch.

DECREASE TIP:
Decrease 1 stitch after each marker as follows: Slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch (= 1 stitch decreased).

HAT - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE:
The piece is worked in the round with short circular needle; change to double pointed needles when necessary.

HAT:
Cast on 96-108-120 stitches with circular needle size 3 mm and red. Knit 1 round. Then work rib (= knit 2 / purl 2) for 3 cm. Change to circular needle size 3.5 mm and knit 1 round where you decrease 12 stitches evenly on round = 84-96-108 stitches. Then work pattern in the round according to A.1 (= 7-8-9 repeats of 12 stitches). REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! When A.1 has been completed the piece measures approx. 13 cm. Continue with light brown to finished length.
When the piece measures 14-14-16 cm, insert 6 markers in the piece with 14-16-18 stitches between each one. On the next round decrease 1 stitch after each marker – read DECREASE TIP (= 6 stitches decreased). Decrease like this every 2nd round a total of 5-6-6 times and then every round a total of 5-6-6 times = 24-24-36 stitches. On the next round knit all stitches together 2 and 2 = 12-12-18 stitches. Knit 1 round and knit all stitches together again 2 and 2 = 6-6-9 stitches. Cut the strand, pull it through the remaining stitches, pull tight and fasten well. The hat measures approx. 20-21-23 cm.

NOSES:
Crochet with red and crochet hook size 3 mm as follows: Work 4 chain stitches and 1 treble crochet in the 4th chain stitch from the hook, cut and fasten the strand. Work 1 nose for each reindeer (=7-8-9 noses). Tie the noses to each reindeer and fasten the strands.

HAT - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE:
First a lining is worked, which is later folded up and sewn to the wrong side at the bottom of the hat, then a folding edge is worked before working pattern onwards. The hat is worked in the round with circular needle; change to double pointed needles when necessary.

HAT:
Cast on 96-102 (108-114-120) stitches with circular needle size 3 mm and red. Work A.1 (= 6 stitches) a total of 16-17 (18-19-20) times in width (= lining). When A.1 has been completed, the piece measures approx. 5 cm. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION!
The next round is worked as follows with off white: * Knit 2 together, 1 yarn over *, work from *-* over all stitches (= folding edge). Knit 1 round (the yarn overs are not knitted twisted). Then work A.2 (= 6 stitches) a total of 16-17 (18-19-20) times on the round.
When A.2 has been completed, the piece measures approx. 13 cm (including 5 cm lining). The piece is now finished with red. When the piece measures 22 cm (including 5 cm lining; or continue to desired length, there is approx. 18-20 (20-23-25) cm left to work), work 1 round where you decrease 6-2 (8-4-0) stitches evenly on round = 90-100 (100-110-120) stitches. Then insert 10 marker threads in the piece with 9-10 (10-11-12) stitches between each one.
On the next round decrease 1 stitch after each marker thread – read DECREASE TIP (= 10 stitches decreased).
Decrease like this every 8th round a total of 8-9 (9-10-11) times = 10 stitches. Work all stitches together 2 and 2 = 5 stitches. Cut the strand, pull it through the remaining stitches, pull tight and fasten well. The hat measures approx. 40-42 (42-45-47) cm (including lining).

ASSEMBLY:
Fold the lining at bottom of hat onto the wrong side and sew down with red (sew onto a round of red). The hat measures approx. 35-37 (37-40-42) cm.

POM POM:
Make a pom pom with off white of approx. 4-6 cm in diameter and fasten to top of hat.

DECREASE TIP (evenly):
To calculate how to decrease evenly, use the total number of stitches on row (e.g. 76 stitches) and divide stitches by number of decreases to be done (e.g. 4) = 19.
In this example, decrease by knitting every 18th and 19th stitch together.
----------------------------------------------------------

HAT WITH STRIPED EDGE:
Worked in the round on circular needle, switch to double pointed needles when needed.
Cast on 76-78-84 stitches on circular needle size 4.5 mm with white. Work in EDGE - see explanation above. Edge measures 5 cm. Switch to circular needle size 5 mm and continue with red and stocking stitch. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION!
When piece measures 13-13-15 cm, work 1 round while at the same time decreasing 4-0-0 stitches evenly - read DECREASE TIP = 72-78-84 stitches.
Insert 6 marker threads in the hat without working, 12-13-14 stitches apart. Then decrease after every marker thread by knitting 2 together (= 6 stitches decreased on round). Decrease like this every 3½-3½-3 cm 10-12-11 times in total = 12 stitches remain on needles. Then knit all stitches together 2 by 2 = 6 stitches. Cut the yarn and pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten together and fasten. Piece measures approx. 45-48-48 cm.

POMPOM:
Make a pompom of approx. 5 cm in diameter with white. Fasten the pompom at the top of the hat.

Decrease like this every 4½-4½-4 cm 10-12-11 times in total = 12 stitches remain on needles. Then knit all stitches together 2 by 2 = 6 stitches. Cut the yarn and pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten together and fasten. Piece measures approx. 54-58-59 cm.

POMPOM:
Make a pompom of approx. 5 cm in diameter equal amounts of red and white. Fasten the pompom at the top of the hat.
